Asks and browser information

As you know, I love receiving bug reports. XKit is a huge extension, so catching all bugs is impossible for me without your help. Each bug report makes XKit more stable and reliable.

That being said, I’ve added a warning box on the ask page, asking people to send at least their browser name and XKit version, and telling them that bug reports without at least the browser name and XKit version will not be answered from now on.

I’m not doing this to waste your time or ignore your messages, but to actually improve XKit: between school and work, I have little time to work on XKit, so the less time I spend on my inbox, the more time I can spend adding new features and improving XKit.

The thing is, XKit’s backend works differently on each browser, so there are a lot of browser and XKit version specific differences. Without receiving that information, the following happens:

  1. Someone sends a bug report, without XKit version or browser name.
  2. I send a reply, asking for those two.
  3. They tell me their browser name / XKit version. By the time they answer, I’ve already answered 35-40 asks, filling the outbox, so I have to send another reply, asking them again what problem they were having.
  4. This goes on, ad infinitum.

This not only frustrates them, thinking I’m not taking them seriously, but also causes a lot of time to be wasted, and again, that time can be used to add new features for all to enjoy to XKit.

Again, this is not done to discourage people from sending asks, my inbox is always open for all, or to ignore your asks, but to prevent the above situation from happening. Thank you for your understanding.

XKit Update, Search Edition

Two updates for the Tumblr Search Update:

Classic Search, a new, simple extension that allows you to search for tags the way it used to be, is now available on the Extension Gallery. You can choose if the results should appear on the same page or open in a new tab from it’s options.

Tags on Sidebar extension is also updated to let you disable the results opening in a new tab and brings several bug fixes with it.

Timestamps are also updated to work on the new search page.

If you encounter any bugs, please let me know by sending me an ask. Thank you!

XKit 7.2.1 Available for Safari 7

XKit 7.2.1 is now available for OS X Mavericks users. This update fixes the “DOM Exception 25” error that prevented users from using XKit on Safari 6.1 / 7.0.

To update, just go to the XKit download page and download it again.

If you encounter the error even after updating, try removing XKit from the Safari Preferences and try installing it again. If that doesn’t fix the problem, please send me an ask. Thank you!

Inbox problems (fixed now) and more

I apologize deeply for the problems you have been having with XKit lately. It’s just that right after I’ve started my vacation:

  1. A server-side Tumblr bug caused XInbox to stop working (day 3)
  2. Tumblr changed the sidebar and notifications (day 4 or 5)
  3. Tumblr changed the Inbox code, confusing XKit and causing it to tag you, instead of the asker. (day 5 or 6)
  4. OS X 10.9 with Safari 7 came out, and apparently, XKit is not supported by that. (DOM error)

Since I’m just eating pizza in my room tonight, I was able to fix the tagging problem with asks. XInbox 1.7 REV G fixes the wrong tagging. You can wait a few hours for automatic updating, or go to your XKit Control Panel > XInbox > Update to get the update now.

I would fix the Safari 7 bug too, but this hotel internet is not good enough to download it without keeping me waiting for at least 3-4 hours, so it will be fixed as soon as I get home, which is this monday. And lastly, the dashboard update caused all the icons of the buttons XKit add there to just vanish. Since it would take at least a few hours, and that I’m really tired today, those will be fixed this monday, also.

Again, please accept my apologizes for the problems you’ve been having. Thank you so much for your patience.

XInbox / Part III

Looks like Tumblr resolved the bug on their servers, so publishing asks using XInbox and tagging/editing published ones work now.

If you disabled it, you can enable XInbox again now.

XInbox / Part II

In addition to answering asks, there is also a problem with reblogging asks. Again, it’s Tumblr.

Now you might be asking yourself why you can answer posts while XKit is disabled, but can’t when it’s not, so it does look like an XKit bug, but here’s the reason:

  • The standard Inbox uses Tumblr’s /publish_ask method, while XInbox/XKit overwrites that and uses /svc/update, since the /publish_ask method does not let you specify tags.
  • /svc/update is used to edit and reblog posts, including asks. There is a problem related to /svc/update and asks combined, which causes XKit to fail.

To test this, disable XKit completely and try adding tags to an already published ask or reblogging one. You’ll get a red “Something went wrong” box. So, again, this is a Tumblr bug, and there is absolutely nothing I can do to fix this.

Again, I’m sick, and going on vacation in a few days so I can’t answer asks, and this will be my last post for a while. Also, for those who did it / planning to do it, I would appreciate if you would stop yelling / cursing at me in my inbox, thank you. =3

XInbox

I’m still pretty ill, but some people texted me and I’ve noticed that I’ve received a lot of asks from people not being able to tag asks. From what I could gather, it sounds like a Tumblr server error (ie: asks not getting tagged using the edit window even if XKit is disabled).

Please disable XInbox for a while, until this gets fixed, so you can publish asks. There isn’t anything I can do about this, I apologize.

Gone for a while

(And the last post of today is about me.)

Just a heads up that I won’t be able to make any updates to XKit between today (Oct. 12th) and October 28th. There are two reasons for that, one is health-related, and the other is that I’ll be in a great city on the other side of the world for ~9 days.

As you know, I take breaks from XKit every 1-2 months for 5-6 days or so to “refresh” myself and to avoid burnout, but even then, I check my inbox and dashboard/tags, albeit less frequently than usual, and provide fixes for any really-annoying/show-stopper bugs.

This break differs from those, since I don’t think I’ll be able to check my inbox at all (or even get on Tumblr on a computer, perhaps). For the health one, I got some blood results, and feeling very ill today, so I really would like/need to get some rest and clear my head. And for the trip one, I’ve had around ~5 days of vacation the whole year, and have been saving money for this trip, so I would like to meet people, go outside and have some fun.

I apologize deeply in advance if something goes wrong when I’m gone, and I thank you for your support and patience during these 2 weeks.

In the meanwhile, I suggest if that something does go wrong due to a Tumblr update, just disable that extension from the XKit Control Panel and not disable XKit completely so you can easily enable it once it gets updated and not have to re-install XKit.

Thank you so much,
The not-terminally-ill-or-infectious XKit Guy.

Blog Tracker Credit

Blog Tracker was the result of around 30 people suggesting it in less than 24 hours. I think only 2-3 of them redirected me to a post, while others mentioned it or copy/pasted the contents of it, so I didn’t know (actually, missed) the person who came up with the idea.

Most additions to XKit go uncredited (unless if it’s a code push made to GitHub) since nearly all the time, it’s either more than 6-7 people suggesting the same, one of the features Tumblr removed that people want back, or stuff I come up while showering. (I wish I had a less naked method of coming up with these.)

But this is an original idea (just like TagViewer), and it originated from just one person, so I would like to thank hobbitsunite for the idea, and I apologize deeply for not making this post sooner, it is just less than an hour ago I found the original poster.

Clarification on Blog Tracker and URL Changing

I’ve gotten a few asks and been seeing some comments on that post, so I should clarify something: XKit is not black magic.

Blog Tracker alerts you when a person changes their URL, but does not (and can not, anyways) tell you what their new URL is. If it hits a “Not Found” page, it shows you an “error” message on the sidebar, or if it notices an abnormality (like zero posts) it says “changed”.

Your privacy is safe. Blog Tracker can not be used to “track you down” if you change your URL for whatever reason.

One-Click Postage Update, October 2

Besides fixing a bug that would cause problems with line breaks, version 2.7 Rev G brings a new option on it’s control panel that lets you use HTML on the One-Click Postage pop-up window (disabled by default).

If you like adding HTML to bold text or URLs, you can enable it from XKit Control Panel > One-Click Postage > Enable HTML in One-Click Postage popup.
