#XKit Update
Outbox 0.5 is now available

A new version of Outbox is now available in the extension gallery. This version saves the asks you’ve sent, whether they are sent using the ask form on their blogs or In-Dashboard Asks window on your dashboard or inbox.

You can wait for XKit to update itself, or you can update it manually from the control panel.

It’s pretty experimental, so if you hit any bugs, please let me know by sending me an ask. Thank you!

PSA: XKit and Ads and Viruses

I’m still on my break, but I’ve been getting asks and seeing posts and reviews about stuff such as XKit displaying ads on their dashboards, posting stuff for them and more.

Let me assure you once again that there is no code in XKit that does anything like that. As you know, XKit is open source, and people contribute and review the code all the time. If I were to add something evil, you can be sure that would not go unnoticed. Please know that XKit:

  1. Does not display ads on Tumblr or any other website whatsoever.
  2. Does not publish posts or follow blogs without your permission.
  3. Only works on Tumblr.com (and does not work on HTTPS pages such as Tumblr login and settings pages).
  4. Does not collect any of your information.

If you are seeing ads or stuff on your blog that you did not post, or any other “weird” stuff like that, I recommend checking your browser’s extension/add-on pages for suspicious extensions. (Instructions for Chrome, Firefox and Safari)

If you are unsure, just delete them all and re-install them from their official website (and as for XKit, only download it from www.xkit.info)

Again, I respect your privacy, and would not do anything like the ones listed above. Thank you for reading.

The Week at a Glance + The XKit Guy Leaves The Building

In case you’ve missed, the following extensions were launched in the last 5 days: NotificationBlock, Audio+, One-Click Reply w/ In-Dashboard Replies, Mute 2.0, Profiler. The plan was to release a new extension each day, making this week “The Week of the Extensions”, but, well, work kinda prevented that.

Conflicting Extensions

I’ve received a few asks about Unfollow / Like / Reblog buttons not appearing when you visit someone’s blog, asking me if it’s an XKit or Tumblr error. I could not reproduce it myself, until an XKit user, thatspectersmile (thank you, by the way!) pointed that an extension called Ghostery they had installed was causing it.

So I’ve compiled a list of extensions that’s known to cause problems with Tumblr and/or XKit. I’ll be posting them on the xkit.info website soon, it’s not complete, but these are all I can think of now.

Please check the list and disable these extension before contacting Tumblr support or sending me an ask, since neither I or them can help you if you have them installed.

Changes to XKit News

I’ve just pushed an update to XKit Control Panel, changing some stuff about the News Notifications:

  1. Before, if you had News Notifications turned off, only “Important” (I didn’t send any of these yet, hopefully won’t for a long time) news would be delivered to your computer. With the update, the “unimportant” news gets delivered to your computer, but does not cause the “You have unread news” popup to appear.
  2. Unchecking News Notifications under Control Panel > Other causes all the news items to be marked as read.

If you have that option turned off, but still get the “You have unread news”, after receiving the update (or forcing an update by going to XKit Control Panel > Other > Update All) just check/uncheck the checkbox and it will go away.

I hope this way, people will receive the news, but not get bothered with them. If, for some reason, you have News turned on but don’t get the notification popup in the next days, please let me know by sending me an ask. Thank you!

XKit DashboardGL

A week ago or so, Tumblr implemented this thing they call DashboardGL. (I’m guessing GL stands for Ghost List, but not sure.) What it does is, it “hides” photos so you can scroll the page at greater speeds. It increases the performance of the dashboard.

But -at least on the test machines I’ve had - it caused problems with XKit, with avatars becoming white boxes. Since I have no energy left to reverse-engineer and read code with variables and function names like “a”, “b”, I’ve just written something called “XKit DashboardGL”.

What this does is, it checks the avatars that is in the view (visible on the screen), and if they still have the blank avatar, it “fixes” it itself.

The reason why I’m writing this is I’m not too sure about it’s performance. I’ve recently pushed it, and you’ll get it soon (with XKit Patches), so if you experience a slow dashboard after it arrives, please let me know.

Each time it works, it calculates and displays the time it took to do it’s job on your browser’s console. On Chrome, you can open this by right clicking the page, selecting Inspect Element and then Console. It should be something like “XKit dashboardGL: 2.012ms”. I would appreciate if you can send it along with your ask too.

Thank you so much! =3

Clarifications on XIM/XKit + Asks

I’ve seen multiple posts and replies, and got a few asks about XKit shutting down. XKit is not shutting down, it’s XIM - XKit Instant Messenger - that will be shut down next month. I will be working on XKit as long as I have the energy and free time to work on it.

Also, again, my apologies for the delays in answering your asks. Some of them are already outdated actually, since the bugs pointed out was fixed. Again, I’ll be responding to them as soon as possible. Thank you for the bug reports and feature suggestions.

I’ve been getting a lot of asks these days, and have been busy at work (and, well, other stuff). I’m still reading all of them, and they will be answered as soon as possible.

If you’ve sent me an ask, and waiting for a reply, I’m really sorry about this delay. Thank you so much for the bug reports and feature suggestions, and please accept my apologies for this delay.

Quick Tags, TagViewer and Unfollower Hater

A couple of days ago, a few XKit users told me that Quick Tags and TagViewer icons would not show up on their tumblr.com/blog/[blog name] pages.

I could not reproduce the error myself until someone pointed out that they had an extension called Unfollower Hater, and the problem went away when they disabled it. (thank you, by the way! =3)

So I’ve downloaded it to try it myself and, yes, that extension not only blocks XKit from putting the Quick Tags and TagViewer buttons when on a /blog/[blog name] page, but it also causes problems with Blacklist and more. (The Javascript console is full of error messages when it’s active) The problem goes away when you disable it.

I’m still investigating what is going on, but it looks like it has some code that breaks XKit, and I doubt there is much I can do about it, so for now, you have 3 choices: (1) remove Unfollower Hater (2) write to the author of it (3) or, disable it and only enable it when you want to check who unfollowed you.

I’m sorry about this, but (at least) for now, it sounds like it is something that is beyond my control: not only it’s an extension not written by me, the code is in Spanish, so it’s kinda hard to understand what is going on, so I can not provide any help to you as long as you have it installed. Even if I could speak Spanish, and figure out what is going on, I probably would have to re-write a huge part of XKit, and with 90% of my time going to fixing stuff Tumblr breaks with updates, I can not handle more.

Thank you for your understanding.

Blacklist Update, September 5

This is one of the reasons why it took so long for me to add “#word” support to Blacklist: I was afraid I would break something. I’ve identified and (hopefully) fixed a bug that would break Blacklist and not block posts on some words and tags, after yesterday’s update.

I know that some people depend on Blacklist to block stuff like flashing gifs or triggering images, so please accept my deepest apologies. I’ve been testing it for a while, and looks like it works not, so I’ve pushed the update.

If you encounter a post that is not blocked even though it should, please send me an ask and I’ll work on it as soon as possible. Thank you.
