Today’s update included an option under One-Click Postage which allows the user to automatically remove the captions of photo/photoset posts.
And I’ve received a lot of asks about this, so I’m going to write about it here, the intention I had behind that feature. Let me start by saying it was not done to strip photos off their author information or credits.
It was added so people can easily reblog photo posts, without having to remove captions like “Follow me for more like this” or thousands of other gifs attached to it, which usually have nothing to do with the photo in question.
I’ve been requested features such as an extension that automatically changes the source or the click-thru link, or one that automatically adds one of those (in my honest opinion, seriously annoying) “Follow me for more” captions, thousands of times, and I’ve always denied such requests, and will continue to do so. Source changing and those captions are what I consider stealing credit.
The way I see it, (and this is what I do when I hit a photo that has no caption), one can easily click on the source link on top-right of the posts to reach to the “root” post, which would hopefully have the author information.
Since Tumblr removed changing the source (this is why people always ask me for a way to change it), one can easily find the author information this way.
As long as there are people who want to remove the credits or the caption of something, they will do it. They will find a way. It is best to let them reblog it this way, keeping the source, than them reposting it without any credits at all.
And let me add that I know how you feel: I used to make gifs on a daily basis. Now all of them point to some other guy’s blog. I would never do anything that would make it easier for others to rip your work off.
Again, creative people of Tumblr, it is not my intention (and never was) to rip your credits of your posts. I apologize if this caused any (rightful) anger, and I hope you understand what my intention was with that feature.
